Bukuya in hospital, doubtful to face Eels ( admin posted on December 29th, 2018 )

For the second week in a row, Cronulla are being forced to deal with one of their forwards being hospitalised on game eve with Jayson Bukuya racing the clock to face Parramatta.
南京夜网

Sharks coach Shane Flanagan would be forgiven for believing he just can’t take a trick with prop Bukuya in doubt for Saturday’s NRL clash at Southern Cross Group Stadium.

Bukuya was hospitalised and put on a drip after contracting a virus which swept through the Sharks camp this week.

Flanagan said Bukuya was the only player in doubt, despite several of his teammates also falling ill.

It comes just a week after Matt Prior bravely rose from his hospital bed to take on the Gold Coast – a fact the Sharks hid from the public until after their 10-9 victory.

Jokingly asked by journalists whether he secretly had any players in hospital this week, Flanagan replied: “Yeah there is secretly someone in hospital – Jayson Bukuya.

“We’ve had a bit of a virus run through the club. He’s in hospital at the moment on a drip, so you’re right.”

Flanagan wouldn’t reveal which other players had been affected and said he considered Bukuya a 50-50 proposition.

“It happens at all clubs players, I’m not sure what it is, sometimes the fitter they are the easier it is to come down with an illness,” Flanagan said.

“He hasn’t eaten for a couple of days and he’s on a drip. We’ll see over the next 24 hours what happens with him.”

Should Bukuya fail to recover, Kurt Dillon is likely to take his place on the bench.

Bukuya’s illness is ill-timed for the Sharks, who this week lost Josh Dugan to a foot injury, joining Paul Gallen (knee) and Luke Lewis (calf) in their casualty ward.

But Flanagan declared stand-in skipper Wade Graham as a “definite starter” after recovering from a hamstring injury.

Back-rower Scott Sorensen has also passed head knock protocols.

Flanagan said he was wary of the Eels, who have regained their confidence after two straight wins.

Some have declared the Eels’ season back on track – despite still sitting in last spot – and Parramatta coach Brad Arthur urged caution.

“It’s a good improvement that we’ve already made and there’s a lot more improvement that we need to make,” Arthur said.

“Every week the competition gets turned on its head and it changes. We’ll see how we are in another five or six weeks.”

STATS THAT MATTER

* Cronulla has won the past four straight matches against Parramatta, with the Eels last win coming at Shark Park in 2014.

* The Eels are scoring the fewest points (14.3 per game while the Sharks are scoring 15.5 per game (equal third fewest).

Heke appeals fatal one-punch sentence ( admin posted on December 29th, 2018 )

Tamate Heke is appealing his one-punch sentence following a fatal roadside confrontation.A New Zealander acquitted of manslaughter but convicted of Queensland’s new one-punch offence is appealing his sentence.
南京夜网

Tamate Heke was sentenced to six-and-a-half years’ jail in February for the unlawful striking causing death of Shane Merrigan in 2015.

The 38-year-old punched Mr Merrigan in the head during a roadside altercation on the Gateway Motorway on December 1, causing him to fall into the path of a 13.7-tonne rubbish truck.

It was a landmark case in that there was no precedent for someone convicted of the one-punch offence after being cleared of manslaughter.

In the Queensland Court of Appeal on Friday, Justice Walter Sofronoff said Heke’s appeal was centred around that point.

“At the heart of the application for leave to appeal against sentence is what’s said to be an anomaly that you get less for manslaughter than you get for the other one,” he said.

“If that’s right I wonder … whether the charges should’ve been laid the other way around.”

Justice Sofronoff said there was the possibility questions could also be raised about the “correctness of the conviction”.

In sentencing Heke, Justice Peter Applegarth questioned why unlawful striking causing death hadn’t been listed as the primary offence when it required offenders to serve 80 per cent of their sentence behind bars.

“From Mr Heke’s point of view, it’s hard not to see unlawful striking causing death as the more serious count because of the consequences,” he said.

“In retrospect he might have wished that the jury had found him guilty of manslaughter.”

As a result of his conviction under the new law, Heke will not be eligible for parole until he’s served about five years and one month behind bars.

He will then be deported to New Zealand upon his release.

A date for Heke’s appeal to be heard is yet to be set.

Broncos’ Haas sidelined for up to a month ( admin posted on December 29th, 2018 )

Brisbane’s Payne Haas is expected to be sidelined for up to a month due to an ankle injury.Brisbane’s forward depth will again be tested, with prop Payne Haas expected to miss up to a month with an ankle injury.
南京夜网

Scans on Monday are set to confirm Payne suffered a “mild high ankle strain” in the Broncos’ controversial 22-20 NRL win over Canterbury on Thursday night.

“The injury is slated to keep him out for two to four weeks and he will also be monitored for any effects of concussion after coming from the field last night,” the Broncos said in a statement.

Teammates Jack Bird (quad) and Alex Glenn (hamstring) have been cleared to play Manly on May 12.

But Haas’ injury will further stretch Brisbane’s already injury-hit forward stocks.

Lock Tevita Pangai, back-rower Jaydn Su’A, bench forward Joe Ofahengaue and prop Matt Lodge were enormous for Brisbane in their round-nine win over the Bulldogs at Suncorp Stadium.

They will need to back up against the Sea Eagles after Haas joined an injury list that includes Test stars Josh McGuire (ankle) and Matt Gillett (neck).

Coach Wayne Bennett hopes the depleted Brisbane pack takes confidence out of their out-muscling of the Bulldogs’ giant forwards, including Aaron Woods and David Klemmer.

“To think we have got two Australian forwards not playing for us, we lost Payne pretty quickly and (still won) so it’s pleasing,” Bennett said.

“We were behind all night but they did not give up – they are qualities you want to see in your football team.”

Backing up from last round’s dream debut, Haas, 19, lasted just six minutes against Canterbury.

At first, Payne appeared concussed when he rose unsteadily from Klemmer’s monster hit in the 56th minute and had to be escorted off the field.

But Haas was later seen leaving in a moon boot.

It could be worse for Brisbane.

Back-rower Glenn was cleared to play Manly despite leaving the field against Canterbury with hamstring tightness.

“Glenn was taken from the field with hamstring tightness to avoid any major damage to an injury he has suffered previously,” the Broncos said.

“He was checked this morning and given the positive news from medical staff.”

Halfback Bird was also given the green light after suffering a quad complaint when he slipped over and gifted a 65th-minute try to the Bulldogs.

TweetFacebookStart welland stay in the contest early.Find a way to play through Newcastle’s press, not so easy without Rhys Williams to initiate things.Get behind the Jets fullbacks, or get used to Boogaard and Topor-Stanley winning a lot of headers.Stay compact enough to ensure that Carl Valeri and Terry Antonis aren’t doing 60 to 70 metre shuttle runs between attack and defence .Get Troisi and Berisha on the ball centrally to open up space fordangerous wingers Barbarouses and George.Protect a relatively new back-four combination.Find Berisha in the penalty box.Simple really. With even luck, and no VAR please, Ibelieve, with the greatest respect to Melbourne Victory, that the Jets are primed and peaking, and will send a massive and parochial crowd home very happy .

Sporting column: Toohey’s News ( admin posted on December 29th, 2018 )

Knights on frontrow merry-go-roundIt has been labelled the “front-rowmerry-go-round”and right now, the Newcastle Knights are on for the ride.

But so too are several other NRL clubs and whether the Knightsget offempty-handed or with the signature of a prized scalp is the big question.

Currently, they have brought Dragons prop Leeson Ah Mau and Storm middle Tim Glasby to Newcastle for a lookaround the city and the club facilities.

They have also expressed interest in Broncos tearaway Tevita Pangi Jnr and consider Raiders prop Shannon Boyd as another “maybe” target.

But the recruitment of props has become a tangled web with demand out-stripping supply.

In demand: Canberra Raiders prop Shannon Boyd has rejected an offer from his current club and is just one of the players the Knights are looking closely at for next season as they look to bolster their frontrow stocks.

Here is the current state of play.

The Dragons want to keep Ah Mau but he would have to stay for less than the Knights offer. Meanwhile, Ah Mau’s preference is to eventually return home to live in Auckland so the Warriors come into play.

If Ah Mau leaves the Dragons, talkis they will then make a play for Glasby.

Meanwhile, the Raiders believe Boyd may be headed for Gold Coast and if he does, they too are likely to look more closely at Glasby.

But the Titans will only make a play for Boydif they loseJarrod Wallace back to the Broncos, who are going to have to find some big money, which they usually can, to retain the likes of Pangi Jnr and Payne Haas.

Get ourdrift.

Where the cards fall right now is anyone’s guess.

But once the first one goes, generally speaking, the rest follow pretty quickly.

Joel up against his Jets’ bossIt could only happen in sport.

Just a matter of a few hours before they’ll join forces in the Eastern grandstand to cheer home the Jets in the A-League decider tonight, operations manager Joel Griffiths and CEO Lawrie McKinna will go head-to-head in a local Premier League clash a stone’s throw away at Edden Oval when Jaffas take on Jets Youth.

Griffiths will lead the Jaffas attack while McKinna coaches the Jets youngsters.

Joel Griffiths

“We’ve had a chuckle about it this week,” Griffiths said.

“At least it will take our minds off what’s going to happen later on.”

Meanwhile, we are hearing the same fans who used some spray paint to turnthe Griffiths Rd sign near the stadium into Joel Griffiths Rd after the 2008 title win may have something more planned if the Jets triumph again tonight against Victory.

Delivery man’sline of the weekJets man of the momentRileyMcGree received a presentfrom Nikethis week following his unbelievable goal against Melbourne City last weekend.

Riley McGree

AsJoel Griffiths tells it, the delivery man came up with the line of the week when he said: ‘We’ve got a package for the Scorpion King!’

A bad case of poortimingMerewether cricket club’s presentation night at Souths Leagues will clash with the Jets grandfinal tonight but as someone suggestedtous tongue-in-cheek this week, ‘It shouldn’t take long because they didn’t win anything last season’.

“Best man” dodges a bulletManly captain Daly Cherry-Evans dodged a serious bullet when he wasn’t charged for his alleged eye-gougeon Knights co-captain Jamie Buhrer in the final tackle of the game at Lottoland last weekend.

The NRL said Cherry-Evans wasn’t charged because of insufficient video evidence. It was a cop-out.

The real reason wasthey knew the Knights, or more specifically Buhrer, did not want to take itfurther despite the fact thatprivately, no-one in the Newcastle camp was happy about it.

Daly Cherry-Evans

Cherry-Evans was best man at Buhrer’swedding and they are still close mates.

What is baffling is why the Eagles halfbackwould even consider doing what he didto anyone, let alone his best mate.

Hagan in demand from coachesMichael Hagan won an NRL premiership as coach of the Knights and is thecurrent Kangaroos assistant coach so it’s no surprise his advice and assistance is being soughtby local coaches.

Hagan is again helping out with the Fingal Bay Bomboras and he will also assist Knights NSWCup assistant coach Daniel Fitzhenry with the CRL Newcastle Under 23’s side in the Country Championships.

Michael Hagan

His latest gig is advisor to Souths Lionscoach Ben Cross, which explainshispresencein the Lions’ change-room last Sunday.

Socceroos’ book local launchWhat Andrew Howe doesn’t know about the Socceroos and football in general is not worth knowing.

Which makes his new book Encyclopedia of Socceroos a must-have for avid fans of the code.

If you are interested, Howe is coming to Newcastle for a launch at Magic Park, Broadmeadow onMonday, May 28 between 5.30 and 7 pm.
